How to book gutter cleaning in Newmarket before the frost

Newmarket's older streets around Main Street, Downtown Newmarket and Glenway sit under mature maples and oaks, and those trees drop most of their leaves from mid October into November. The newer subdivisions in Stonehaven, Summerhill and Woodland Hill have smaller street trees but larger two-storey houses, which means longer eavestrough runs and taller ladders. Either way, the fall clean is the one that matters: water left in a packed trough freezes, and ice dams and overflow against the foundation are what wet basements in March are made of.

When should I get my gutters cleaned in Newmarket?

Does the Town of Newmarket have rules about eavestroughs?

Yes. Newmarket's Property Standards By-law 2017-62 says that where eavestroughs, roof gutters and downspouts are installed, they must be kept in good repair, free from leaks and securely fastened to the building. The same by-law says roof drainage must not cause recurrent ponding or run into a basement, must not be discharged onto walkways, stairs or a neighbour's property, and that runoff from downspouts must stay on your own lot until it soaks in or reaches a storm sewer or swale. In practice: a sagging trough, a leaking seam or a downspout pouring onto the neighbour's driveway is a property standards issue, not only a maintenance one.

• Point each downspout extension at least a couple of metres away from the foundation, onto your own lawn or a splash pad.
• Keep the discharge off the driveway and walkway, where it freezes into an ice sheet in winter.

What should I ask a gutter cleaner before booking?

• Is the price for the whole house, including every downspout flushed and checked?
• Where does the debris go: bagged and taken away, or left in yard waste bags for my curb?
• Do you carry liability insurance, and can you send the certificate?
• Do your workers use fall protection and have Working at Heights training for two-storey work?
• Will you send photos of anything you think needs repair, with a separate quote, rather than fixing it on the spot?

Ontario has no licence for gutter cleaning, so the checks are practical ones: insurance, the right ladders and fall protection, and a written price. If the cleaner finds loose hangers or a leaking seam, a small repair on the day is reasonable when the price is agreed first; a push to replace all the eavestroughs or buy guards deserves photos and a separate quote.

What do I do with the leaves in Newmarket?

Put them out with yard waste, which the Town collects every other week from April to early December on your regular collection day. Use kraft paper yard waste bags or a rigid open-top container of up to 125 litres with a yellow Yard Waste sticker, keep each one under 22 kg (50 lb), and set them out after 5 p.m. the night before and by 7 a.m. on the day. Grass clippings, soil and plastic bags are not accepted. Gutter sludge is heavy when wet, so ask the cleaner to split it across several bags or take it away.
