Landscaping, decks & fences in Burlington, Ontario

Burlington needs a permit for any deck attached to the house, and for a detached deck that is over 10 m² (108 ft²), over 60 cm (2 ft) above the ground, or covered by a roof. A small, low, uncovered free-standing deck doesn’t need one. Inside Burlington’s urban area, removing or injuring a private tree 20 cm (8 in) or more in diameter at 1.37 m needs a City permit; public trees of any size always do. Dead, terminally ill or high-risk trees confirmed by a qualified professional still need a permit, but the fees and replacement compensation are waived. Doyo books landscaping across Burlington: describe the job, see the full price before you book, and pay only when it is done.

Landscaping & Decks in Burlington: what to know

About Burlington

Deck permits

Building permits

Burlington doesn’t need a building permit for a fence, a shed under 15 m² with no plumbing, like-for-like furnace or air-conditioner replacement, or swapping plumbing fixtures of the same type in the same place. Most other work — including a basement finish — goes through a building permit application, and the City asks for a Pre-Building Approval (zoning, grading and tree check) first.

Yard waste

Halton Region collects Burlington’s yard waste from the first week of April to the second week of December on your garbage day, in paper yard waste bags or open, labelled rigid containers — never plastic bags. Each bag or container can hold up to 125 L and weigh no more than 50 lb, and brush must be tied in bundles no larger than 2 m by 1 m with branches under 7.5 cm across.

FAQ

Landscaping & Decks in Burlington: common questions

Help centre

By written quote. A pro visits, looks at the space and sends a line-by-line quote in the app. You pay a deposit when you accept it, and Doyo holds that deposit until you confirm the work is done. Part of the pro’s payment is held back for a warranty period after completion, so there is still money on the table if something needs putting right.
