Prices checked October 2026. A move between provinces is priced differently from a move across town. GTA movers charge local moves by the hour; long-distance movers price your shipment by its weight and the distance, then add packing, access, storage and coverage. Shipping less is the biggest saving you control.
How much does it cost to move from Toronto to Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax or Montreal?
For a full-service move, where the crew loads, drives and unloads, budget the ranges below. They come from 2026 route guides by GreenBuilding Canada, Movers.ca, Kams Movers, Motion Transport and MTS Moving. The guides disagree on details, so the table gives the span most of them share. Packing, storage and a car are extra.
| Route | Road distance | Studio or 1-bed | 2–3 bedrooms | 4-bedroom house |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto to Montreal | about 540 km | $1,100–$2,200 | $2,500–$5,500 | $4,500–$7,500 |
| Toronto to Halifax | about 1,800 km | $1,800–$3,500 | $3,000–$6,500 | $6,500 and up |
| Toronto to Calgary | about 3,400 km | $2,400–$4,000 | $4,000–$8,000 | $7,000–$11,000 |
| Toronto to Vancouver | about 4,400 km | $2,500–$5,000 | $4,500–$9,500 | $8,000–$14,000 |
Starting from Newmarket or Aurora instead of downtown Toronto usually changes little over this distance. Access matters more: a house with a driveway loads faster than a condo with a booked elevator and a loading dock too tight for a full-size trailer.
How do long-distance movers calculate the price?
By weight and distance, plus the services you add. The mover estimates what your belongings weigh and multiplies it by a rate per pound for the route. Movers.ca puts Toronto to Vancouver at about $0.90 to $1.40 a pound before access fees. A two-bedroom typically weighs 5,000 to 7,000 pounds, which at those rates comes to roughly $4,500 to $9,800, the table’s range before extras.
- Packing by the mover: about $500 to $2,000 depending on the size of the home.
- Fuel surcharge: commonly 3% to 12% of the base price. Ask whether it is already in the quote.
- Storage in transit, if your new place is not ready: about $100 to $450 a month. The Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) describes it as short-term storage of up to 60 days.
- Access charges: stairs, a long carry from the truck to the door, or a shuttle truck where a full-size trailer cannot get in.
- Heavy or specialty items such as a piano, safe or home gym: often $100 to $600 each.
- Coverage: basic released-value cover pays $0.60 a pound per item, so a 50-pound TV is worth $30 in a claim. Replacement-value protection costs more.
Should I get a binding or non-binding moving estimate?
Ask for a binding estimate. It fixes the total for the items and services listed, as long as you do not add things. A non-binding estimate is the mover’s approximation, and the final bill follows the actual weight. Either way, the mover should see your home in person or on video, room by room, including the basement and garage.
On a weight-based move, ask for the weigh-scale tickets: the truck is weighed empty and again loaded, and the difference is your shipment. A large jump over the estimate with nothing added is a reason to question the bill. If you sign in Ontario, the Consumer Protection Act, 2002 also applies: the price cannot go more than 10% over the estimate unless you agree to a new price, and a mover may not hold your belongings to make you pay more.
Are moving containers, shared loads or a rental truck cheaper?
Sometimes, but over 3,000 km the gap is smaller than most people expect, because fuel, hotels and your time add up.
- Shared load (consolidated move): your things share a trailer with other households and you pay for your weight only, which suits a studio or one-bedroom. The trade-off is a delivery window, often 7 to 14 business days to Vancouver, instead of a fixed date.
- Portable container such as PODS or BigSteelBox: you load, the company drives. Kams Movers’ 2026 Toronto to Calgary figures put a container at $3,500 to $4,500 for a one-bedroom and $5,200 to $6,800 for a three-bedroom house. Delivery, rental and pickup are often billed separately.
- Rental truck: the lowest sticker price, but you pay for fuel over 3,400 to 4,400 km, hotels, meals and any damage. Kams Movers puts a realistic Toronto to Calgary total at $2,800 to $4,000 for a one-bedroom and $4,500 to $5,800 for a three-bedroom.
When is the least expensive time to move across Canada?
October to April, midweek and mid-month. The route guides put summer moves (May to August) at roughly 15% to 30% more, and Kams Movers quotes the same Toronto to Calgary load at $4,000 to $6,000 in winter against $6,000 to $8,500 in summer. Month-end is busiest, and Montreal has its own rush around July 1, Quebec’s traditional moving day. In winter, leave slack in the delivery window: mountain passes into British Columbia close in bad weather.
How do I spot a bad interprovincial mover?
Walk away from a mover who wants a large deposit, prices your move by phone without seeing your things, or has no real address. The Canadian Association of Movers also lists these warning signs:
- A price far below every other quote, or payment demanded at loading instead of delivery.
- A price based only on the number of rooms, with no survey.
- A broker posing as the mover. Ask who owns the truck that will carry your things.
- Unmarked rental trucks, or a different company turning up on the day.
- Only basic cover at $0.60 a pound, with no option to buy more.
- “First available” delivery with no date range in writing.
Can I deduct moving expenses on my Canadian tax return?
Yes, if your new home is at least 40 km closer to your new job, business or full-time post-secondary school, measured by the shortest normal route. You calculate the claim on Form T1-M and enter it on line 21900 of your return.
- Employees and self-employed people can deduct only against income earned at the new location. Amounts you cannot use this year carry forward, not back.
- Full-time students can deduct only against taxable scholarships, bursaries, fellowships or research grants.
- Eligible costs include moving and storing your things (packing, hauling, insurance), travel, up to 15 days of temporary lodging, breaking a lease, the costs of selling your old home and, if you sold it, legal fees and land transfer tax on the new one.
- If your employer reimbursed you, either include that amount in income or subtract it from your claim.
For example, if you live in Newmarket and take a job in Calgary, the move passes the distance test and the movers’ bill can be deducted from what you earn in Calgary. The details decide how much you get back, so check with an accountant before you count on it.
How much does it cost to ship a car across Canada?
Price it as a separate line: Toronto to Vancouver on an open car carrier runs about $1,200 to $1,900 for a sedan in 2026, more for an SUV or pickup, and enclosed transport about $1,800 to $2,800. Rail costs around $1,000 to $1,500 but takes longer. Many household movers send the car with a separate vehicle carrier, so ask, and plan for 7 to 12 days.
What can I get done in the GTA before a long-distance move?
Shrink the shipment before the survey, not after: every pound you do not ship comes off the bill. Doyo does not do long-distance moves, but Doyo pros in Toronto and York Region can help with the local part.
Junk Removal on Doyo is $196 per quarter truck load and Packing Help is $56 an hour, $112 minimum. If some things go to a storage unit or a relative’s place nearby first, Local Move is $100.80 an hour, $302.40 minimum. These are full prices with Doyo’s fee included, shown before you book. If you pack yourself or with help, ask the long-distance mover how it covers boxes its crew did not pack; many limit claims on them.
