The first cold days of October are when this question comes up, because the furnace has sat for five or six months. In a gas furnace the burners heat a metal heat exchanger, and the blower pushes house air across it and into the ducts. Anything resting on those hot surfaces, or pulled through a clogged filter, gets cooked and the smell travels through every register at once. That is why a perfectly normal smell can feel alarming: it is suddenly everywhere.

Is a burning smell normal when you first turn on the heat?

Yes, a dry, toasted-dust smell on the first heating cycles of the season is normal. Carrier, the furnace maker, puts it at roughly 30 minutes to a few hours. It should get weaker each cycle and be gone by the next day. Electric baseboards and space heaters do the same thing for the same reason. A brand-new furnace can also smell for its first few runs as coatings on new metal parts burn off.

How long should the burning dust smell last?

Usually under an hour, and rarely past the first day. Help it along: set the thermostat a few degrees higher so the furnace runs one long cycle instead of many short ones, open a couple of windows, and put in a fresh filter before you start, so the dust in the old one is not baked into the air. If a mild smell is still there on day two or three, or it returns at the start of every cycle, stop treating it as dust and look at the filter and what is stored around the furnace.

Can a dirty filter cause a burning smell?

Yes, in two ways. A clogged filter lets dust past it onto the hot parts, and it starves the furnace of air, so the blower motor works harder and runs hot. Carrier lists an overheated blower motor, often from heavy dust or a clogged filter, as a cause of a burning-plastic smell. Pull the filter and hold it to a light; if you cannot see through it, replace it with the same size printed on the frame. Then clear a metre around the furnace: storage pushed against the cabinet or the return-air duct is a common source of a smell people blame on the furnace.

What if it smells like burning plastic or electrical?

Turn the heat off at the thermostat, switch off the furnace at its service switch (it looks like a light switch on or near the unit), and do not run it again until it has been checked. A sharp, chemical, hot-wire smell is different from dust: it usually means a motor, a capacitor or a wire is overheating. If the smell is strongest at an outlet, a switch, a plug or the panel rather than at the furnace, it is an electrical problem in the house, and the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) tells homeowners to call a licensed electrical contractor for signs like this. Warm or discoloured cover plates and buzzing are the same warning.

In Toronto and York Region homes, what makes it worse?

Enbridge Gas supplies natural gas in Toronto, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Newmarket and Aurora, so most homes here heat with a gas furnace in the basement, and October is when most of them start for the season. A few local patterns come up often:

  • Finished basements put storage, drywall and the laundry close to the furnace room. Boxes against the cabinet, lint from the dryer and dust from a basement renovation all end up on hot parts.
  • Older houses: 29% of the City of Toronto's homes were built in 1960 or earlier, and about 30% of Newmarket's before 1981 (Statistics Canada, 2021 Census). Older duct runs hold more dust, and older furnaces have older motors and wiring, so a smell that is not dust deserves a technician sooner.
  • Newer homes: about half of Vaughan's homes date from 2001 or later. In a house's first winters, construction dust in the ducts can make the first-run smell stronger and longer.
  • Condos and apartments, almost half of Toronto's homes, often heat with fan coils or baseboards rather than a furnace. The first-use dust smell is the same; a persistent one goes to building management first.

What to tell the pro

These details let a technician tell dust from a fault on the phone, and quote the visit properly:

  • What it smells like, in your words: dust, hot plastic, rubber, electrical, oily, or rotten eggs.
  • When it happens: only the first day, every time the burners light, or only when the blower runs.
  • Where it is strongest: at the furnace, at one register, in one room, or at an outlet or the panel.
  • The furnace's age and the date of its last service (both are often on a sticker on the cabinet), and when the filter was last changed.
  • Any other signs: a hum or buzz, a blinking light on the furnace, the breaker tripping, or a CO alarm chirping.
  • A photo of the furnace's rating label and of the area around it.

What does a furnace check cost on Doyo?

If the smell keeps coming back or the furnace has not been serviced in over a year, Furnace Maintenance on Doyo is $206.50, all-in with Doyo's fee included. A fault such as an overheating blower motor is booked as Furnace Repair, priced by written quote before work starts. In Ontario, gas work needs a TSSA-registered contractor and a certified gas technician, and Doyo checks the technician's certificate before they are offered heating work.

Questions people ask

Yes, if the smell is plainly dusty and gets weaker each cycle. Open a window and replace the filter. If it smells like plastic, rubber, wiring or rotten eggs instead, or you see smoke, turn the furnace off and get help.
