Prices checked September 2026. Plumbing is a compulsory trade in Ontario: anyone paid to do it needs a Certificate of Qualification (306A) from Skilled Trades Ontario, or must be a registered apprentice. That, plus a van full of parts, insurance and unbilled drive time, is why a plumber’s bill is well above the trade’s wage. Government of Canada Job Bank data puts the median plumber wage in the Toronto region at $35.20 an hour (2024), with the top of the range at about $53. A shop charging $120 to $150 an hour is covering that wage roughly three to four times over, which is normal for a trade business, not a sign of gouging.
How much do plumbers charge per hour in Ontario?
Most Ontario plumbing shops quote $110 to $150 an hour for daytime work, with downtown Toronto at the top of the range and smaller cities lower. Contractor price guides published in 2025 and 2026 put downtown Toronto around $145 to $200, the GTA suburbs around $130 to $170, and Hamilton, London and Kitchener closer to $115 to $145. Rural areas can be cheaper by the hour but add mileage.
Two pricing styles are common. Some shops charge a service call (often $90 to $200, sometimes credited against the repair) and then bill by the hour. Others quote a flat price per job once they have seen it. Neither is better; what matters is that you know which one you are getting before work starts.
What do common plumbing jobs cost?
The ranges below are built from published 2025 to 2026 price guides by Toronto and Ontario plumbing contractors, cross-checked against each other. They are labour-led figures; fixtures such as a new faucet or toilet are usually extra unless the quote says otherwise.
| Job | Low | Typical | High | What drives it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hourly rate, daytime | $90 | $120–$150 | $200 | City, shop size, licensed plumber vs apprentice |
| Service call / diagnostic | $90 | $130–$175 | $200+ | Often includes or is credited to the first hour |
| Faucet install (labour) | $200 | $250–$350 | $450–$600 | Seized supply valves, undermount sinks, pull-down models |
| Faucet repair (cartridge, washer) | $100 | $150–$250 | $350 | Finding the right cartridge for older brands |
| Toilet repair (flapper, fill valve) | $120 | $150–$300 | $400 | Parts, corroded bolts, whether the tank must come off |
| Toilet replacement (labour) | $180 | $250–$450 | $600–$700 | Flange condition, disposal of the old toilet |
| Pipe leak, visible and reachable | $200 | $300–$600 | $700 | Copper vs PEX, pipe size, shut-off access |
| Pipe leak behind a wall or ceiling | $400 | $600–$1,200 | $1,500+ | Opening and closing drywall, finding the leak |
| After-hours or weekend | 1.5× | 1.5–2× | 2×+ | Evening, overnight and holiday rates, two-hour minimums |
What does a plumber cost on Doyo?
Doyo sells the most common plumbing jobs at a set price, shown before you book. Faucet Install is $224.20. Toilet Repair is $224.20. Drain Cleaning is $259.60. Pipe Repair is by written quote, because the price depends on where the pipe is and what has to be opened to reach it. Every price is the full price, Doyo’s service fee included; nothing is added at checkout.
Your card is held when a plumber is confirmed and charged only when the job is marked complete. Plumbers on Doyo hold a Certificate of Qualification (306A), and Doyo checks it before they are offered plumbing work. If the plumber finds the job is bigger than what you booked, a new figure has to be put to you in the order chat and agreed before they carry on.
What changes the price of a plumbing job?
- Access. A shut-off valve that will not turn, a trap behind a built-in vanity or a pipe inside a finished ceiling can double the time.
- Age of the house. Older Toronto and York Region homes may have galvanized steel or original copper that crumbles when touched, so a small repair turns into replacing a section.
- Time of day. Evening, overnight and weekend work is commonly billed at 1.5 to 2 times the daytime rate, often with a two-hour minimum.
- Parts and who supplies them. A $90 faucet and a $600 faucet take a similar time to install, but some shops add a margin on parts they supply. Ask whether you can supply the fixture.
- Travel. Shops in the core may add parking or a zone charge; rural calls may add mileage.
- Permits. New fixtures, moved drains and buried piping need a municipal plumbing permit. In Toronto the 2026 minimum permit fee is $214.79, with fixtures at $23.20 each. Like-for-like swaps usually need none, but ask.
- Diagnosis time. A leak you can see is quick; an intermittent drip that shows up as a ceiling stain can take an hour or more to trace.
Is it cheaper to pay a plumber by the hour or a flat rate?
A flat rate is usually better for routine jobs, because the risk of a slow job sits with the plumber rather than you. Hourly billing can come out cheaper for a very quick fix, but a seized nut or a missing part can stretch it. For anything behind a wall, a written estimate after a look is the fairest approach for both sides.
How do I avoid being overcharged by a plumber?
- Get the estimate in writing, with what it includes: labour, parts, disposal, and whether tax is included.
- Know the 10% rule. Under Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act, 2002, a business cannot charge more than 10% over its estimate unless you agree to the new price first.
- Ask for the plumber’s 306A certificate number and check it on the Skilled Trades Ontario public register.
- Ask who pulls the permit when one is needed. It should be the plumber, not you.
- Be wary of large deposits for small jobs. A repair visit should not need money up front beyond a service call.
- Send photos first. A photo of the fixture, the model label and the shut-off lets a plumber quote more accurately and bring the right part.
