Oshawa’s Tree By-law protects City trees — usually those within 2 m of the curb or 1.5 m of the sidewalk — which residents may not prune or alter. For private trees, only Durham Region’s Woodland By-law applies, to woodlands larger than 1 hectare. Oshawa collects yard waste every other week on garbage day from mid-April to early December, in paper bags or marked open-top containers under 20 kg (44 lb). Grass clippings and plastic bags are not accepted.
