Ajax’s Building Services lists decks and porches, sheds, garages and carports, plumbing, renovations and additions among the work that needs a building permit, and publishes a separate guide for finishing a basement. Applications go through the Town’s online portal. Ajax’s Tree Protection By-law (137-2006) needs a permit to damage or remove trees in parks, Greenbelt land and Environmental Protection land. The Town removes only trees on Town property, and prunes the Town-owned boulevard trees on a six-to-eight-year cycle. Durham Region collects Ajax’s yard waste from April to early December, in paper yard bags or labelled open-top containers of 20 kg (44 lb) or less. Grass clippings and plastic bags are not taken.
