In Whitby’s heritage districts any exterior work needs a heritage permit first, so plan spring porch, window and roof jobs over the winter; the new streets in Brooklin are deck and fence season from April. Whitby collects leaves and yard waste every other week from the start of April to the end of November on garbage day, in kraft paper bags or approved open-top containers of 20 kg (44 lb) or less. Grass clippings are not accepted in any Whitby program. On an ordinary Whitby lot — under 0.2 ha of wooded area — no permit is needed to remove a tree, unless the property is in the Werden’s Plan or Brooklin heritage district, where removal needs a Tree Removal Permit.
